Science Night 21: Ecological Restoration
Event description
Aotearoa New Zealand is recognised as one of Earth’s biodiversity hotspots but is in the midst of a biodiversity crisis. More than 40% of our indigenous species are currently considered at risk of extinction. Ecological restoration is the act of returning ecosystems back towards historical conditions to help maintain and enhance biodiversity values. Successful restoration can be a considerable challenge in many local landscapes but strategic weed management, indigenous planting, pest control, and fencing can make the job a lot easier.
This Science Night our guest speaker Adam Purcell will share some general principles, techniques, and tools of the trade to help improve progress and success rates of ecological restoration projects.
Adam Purcell is a local restoration ecologist and the Managing Director/co-founder of Tītoki Landcare, a company specialising in ecological restoration and biodiversity management.
Adam has spent the last 10 years working with councils, landowners, businesses, iwi, community groups, and government departments to maintain, protect and enhance Aotearoa New Zealand’s indigenous biodiversity through the restoration of ecosystems back towards historical conditions.
