Screening of La Linterna's Documentary
Event description
Screening of La Linterna's Documentary at the WaterFire Arts Center
Graphic Voices of Latin America exhibition at the WaterFire Arts Center Gallery showcases a powerful collection of Latin American posters that serve as both artistic expressions and historical documents of resistance, resilience, and cultural identity. Curated by José R. Menéndez and Tatiana Gómez of Buena Gráfica Social Studio, this exhibition presents graphic works from 16 countries across Latin America, spanning themes from political activism and environmental concerns to cultural storytelling. The collection highlights a diversity of printing techniques, typographic styles, and visual languages, including the work of La Linterna, a historic print shop in Cali, Colombia, known for its striking movable-type posters. By amplifying the voices of Latin American and Latinx designers, Gráfica Latina explores how graphic design has shaped and responded to the region’s dynamic social and political landscapes.
La Linterna is featured in Graphic Voices of Latin America with street posters that have been printed since 1934 using movable type and linocuts, leaving hundreds of walls marked in the main cities of Colombia and a legacy that refuses to disappear.
Please join us for a screening of La Linterna's Documentary(30m) at the WaterFire Arts Center at 6 pm on Thursday, March 13th. Following the documentary will be a panel discussion and live music by Luis Gilberto. All are welcome to join.
