Event description

Join us for a double screening of Regard sur la folie and Le moindre geste presented as part of Desire Is a Machine, curated by our Adjunct Curator Stephanie Berlangieri.

11am | Regard sur la folie

1961. France. Directed by Mario Ruspoli. In French; English subtitles. 47 min.

An early cinéma-vérité documentary filmed at Saint-Alban under Dr. François Tosquelles. Ruspoli’s film was the first to document life inside a psychiatric asylum, offering a rare glimpse of the early experiments in institutional psychotherapy that would go on to influence anti-psychiatric practice.

12pm | Le moindre geste

1964-1971. France. Directed by Fernand Deligny, Josée Manenti, Jean-Pierre Daniel. In French; English subtitles. 105 min.

Filmed over several years by Deligny and his collaborators, this poetic, semi-fictional film follows a young non-verbal boy in rural care. Emerging from Deligny’s experimental network for autistic children and his critique of institutional psychiatry, the film rejects conventional narrative in favour of gestures, rhythms, and relational space.
