Sydney Build Expo 2026 | SDS
Description
Hi everyone! 👷♀️🏗️
SDS is organising a student group visit to the Sydney Build Expo, and we’d love for you to join us! It’s a great chance to explore the latest innovations in construction, architecture, and sustainability, while also meeting professionals from across the industry.
Whether you're interested in sustainable design, new building technologies, networking or just curious about what’s happening in the industry, this is a great opportunity to learn and network.
Each day will focus on different themes:
Day One | Wednesday, April 29: Decarbonising Construction, Workplace and Networking
Day Two | Thursday, April 30: Networking, Materiality and Climate Resilience
You can find the full itinerary for both days below, in your email or on our Instagram (@sustainabledesignsociety).
Spots may be limited, so please register ASAP.
Hope to see you there! 😊

Speakers: - Katie Eyles, Embodied Carbon Lead - NABERS - Ryan Flack, New Builds and Planning Lead - NABERS What you'll learn: - How to commit to lower‑carbon construction and translate those commitments into real outcomes - Why meaningful action to reduce embodied carbon needs to start early in the design process - Who is involved at each stage of the project and where responsibility sits - Practical ways to ensure what is planned is what actually gets built - How to measure embodied carbon at project completion to confirm and verify results
- 12:00 pm - 12:50 pm
Workshop: Sustainable Timber in Construction
Speaker: Matt de Jongh, Sustainability Manager - Responsible Wood What you'll learn: This presentation by Matt de Jongh, Sustainability Manager at Responsible Wood, explores why certified timber is a cornerstone of sustainable, low-carbon construction. Timber products sourced from Responsible Wood / PEFC-certified forests are renewable, responsibly managed, and independently verified to meet rigorous environmental, social, and economic standards. The session will highlight how sustainably managed forests provide a continuous, renewable supply of timber while protecting biodiversity, supporting regional communities, and ensuring long-term forest productivity. It will also explain the critical role certified timber plays in climate change mitigation, including carbon sequestration during tree growth and long-term carbon storage in wood products. When timber is used in place of more emissions-intensive materials, it can significantly reduce embodied carbon in the built environment. In addition, the presentation will address the strength and performance properties of modern timber products, including their suitability for structural applications, design flexibility, and innovation in engineered wood systems. Attendees will gain a clear understanding of why certified timber is not only a sustainable choice, but a high-performance material essential to building a resilient, low-carbon future.
- 1:00 pm - 1:50 pm
Panel: Carbon Neutral Construction: Pathways to Zero Emissions in Building
Speakers: - Dr Matthias Irger, National Head of Sustainability - COX Architecture - Julian Sutherland, Head of Sustainable Assets APAC - JLL - Clinton Craggs, Sustainability Director - Webuild - Hannah Jones, Sustainable Design Lead - TTW - Danielle Kwik, Associate Director, Property Buildings - WSP
