We're proud to announce that Maurie Mulheron is going to be singing and performing at the National Members Forum Dinner on Sat 20 April! Maurie will follow Senator Barbara Pocock AM, our guest speaker, with some classic tunes and rousing revolutionary songs. Many of us know Maurie primarily as a trade unionist, educator and activist, and many know that he's a singer and instrumentalist as well. But did you know Maurie Mulheron has been singing folk songs and playing banjo, guitar and mandolin from about the time he saw Pete Seeger in concert in 1968 at the Sydney Town Hall? Many years later Maurie would write “One Word…WE!” a two-hour musical biography of Pete that played to packed theatres and folk festivals across Australia. For over 40 years, Maurie has performed in folk clubs, festivals, theatre shows and concerts in Australia and overseas. We're delighted to have him singing at the Dinner - and speaking earlier in the day at the NMF itself.

Senator Barbara Pocock AM

Barbara Pocock is an Australian Greens Senator for South Australia, and an economist and Emeritus Professor. She grew up on a mallee farm near Lameroo and has worked in universities, shearing sheds, the Reserve Bank, on farms, in unions, for the government and as a mother and carer. In her academic work she led a team of researchers studying how work affects women, men, children and the households and communities in which we live.

Senator Pocock is the Australian Greens spokesperson on Finance, Employment and the Public Sector. Her work in Senate Estimates pursuing the Big Four consulting firms has gained national attention for exposing the huge amounts paid to these firms, their conflicts of interest and breaches of ethics, and the cosy relationships they have had with governments.

The dinner

The dinner will be open to all members and friends, whether you plan to take part in the National Members Forum or not. But of course we hope that you will attend the Forum too, to hear a range of speakers on key issues of our times and join in-depth participatory discussions on them.

Tickets for the dinner are $50 concession/$70 employed. The ticket includes a full Greek buffet – however, to keep costs down for attendees, drinks will need to be bought separately. Get in quick as tickets will go fast!

Please let us know via email if you have any dietary requirements so that we can pass those on to the restaurant.

Transport

This venue is no longer within walking distance from the National Members Forum venue at the NSW Teachers Federation. So, for those attending the dinner after the Forum, we will arrange transport by minibus from the Teachers Federation to the Cyprus Club after the Saturday NMF sessions finish. We will also arrange transport back to the city for anyone who needs it.

For those coming separately to the dinner, there is ample parking at the club if coming by car, and buses (routes 423, 426, 428 from CBD) if coming by public transport. If you want to attend the dinner but the new venue presents transport difficulties, please get in touch and we will make every effort to assist where we can.
