We invite you to gather with us, for an evening of offerings, relaxed performances, food-sharing and making, led by artists from a Season of Care residency.

It has been an introspective year at Utp. Following hyper-productive times after the pandemic, we extended an invitation to artists to come together, rest and share their practices, during our May and October residencies.

October residency artists include: Alex Craig, Aimée Falzon, Gabriela Green Olea, Ju Bavyka, Naomi Segal and Paula Do Prado.

Please bring a blanket that you’d be happy to share, or a support object of your choice.

Activities & Offerings:

5:00-6:00pm Welcome, conversations and nibbles

Ongoing — Weaving materials and making space by Paula do Prado

6:00-6:30pm To lay down and to hold, a collaborative exercise by Ju and Naomi

6:30-7:00pm Breath, moving and movement scores by Alex and Gabriela

7:15-8:00pm She Rested, a relaxed performance by Aimée Falzon - A story and songs to hold our raw hearts

Food and drinks will be provided during the event.

The event is designed by Ju Bavyka assisted by the Utp team, with a series of offerings from the artists, resulting from collaborations or reflection.

Event

There will be an Auslan interpreter at the event.

In the relaxed performance by Aimée Falzon, you are welcome to lay down or sit in a comfortable position. You are also welcome to experience it while eating or making something.

The venue is free of strong fragrances and we would love to keep this as a fragrance-free event. We ask attendees to please avoid wearing strong personal fragrances.

The event is noise-reduced, meaning we will have padded surfaces to minimise echo, and no background music.

This event will have low-key lighting indoors, such as a soft spotlight on the performers or activities.

Arrival

Public Transport – Utp is located very close to Bankstown train station. It is 300 metres, and about a 7-minute walk away. There are several crossings on this walk. Please beware that the Dale Parade car park generally has cars coming in multiple directions.

Parking is available at the Olympic Parade car park. There is also a minibus drop-off zone at Dale Parade, 25 metres to the Arts Centre's main entrance.

If you arrive after 6:30 and the front automatic door is closed, please access the Arts Centre via the back gate through the Olympic Parade car park.

Venue

Wheelchair Access – You can enter the Arts Centre via the front of the building at Dale Parade. There is a lift that can take you from ground level to the courtyard. There is a ramp to get to all rooms but there is no ramp into the inner grassy courtyard. The step down from the courtyard is around 10cm high.

We will maintain wide and clear pathways at this event.

Accessible and all-gender bathrooms are in the foyer of Bankstown Arts Centre. There are also two more that can be accessed via Rehearsal Rooms 1, 2 and the Theatre. They are equipped with a handrail and an assistance button. A baby-change station is available in the foyer bathroom.

Guide Dogs and support animals are welcome at Utp and Bankstown Arts Centre. You can take them into RS1.

A Season of Care is series of events, residencies and talks with care, in all its forms, at the centre. Care as conceptual rationale and as collective provocation.

This program will ensure care is investigated in 'crip time' and from intersectional perspectives, creating a network of new knowledges. Tian Zhang’s, ‘A manifesto for radical care or how to be a human in the arts’ (Sydney Review of Books) and Care Work: Dreaming Disability Justice by Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha are touchstones.

May residency artists include: Alex Craig, Aimée Falzon, Imogen Yang, Ju Bavyka, Naomi Segal, Paula Do Prado and Tania Khouri.

The program is supported by the ‘Curatorium of Care,' a non-hierarchical support structure from which this program will grow. Members include: Riana Head-Toussaint, Tian Zhang, Hannah Donnelly, Hareen Johl, Eddie Abd, Celine Cheung and Jessica Olivieri.
