Join us at Austin Bay Nature Reserve to learn how to conduct microplastics surveys using CSIRO methodology, helping us understand the types and quantities of plastics and litter accumulating in the area. Afterward, we’ll collect as much litter as possible from the foreshore and surrounding areas to help improve the health of this habitat.

The Ramsar-listed Peel-Harvey estuary is the largest and most diverse estuarine complex in south-western Australia. Like many of our urban waterways, it faces numerous environmental challenges, including from pollutants, such as plastic and other litter. Results of recent clean-ups in the area found that 82.5% of litter found in the Peel-Harvey region comprised plastic food packaging, cigarette butts, and hard plastic fragments, which all have very long decomposition times and can devastate marine and bird life. The same results showed that in the Peel-Harvey Catchment, 97% of litter is from a land-based source, meaning any interventions that address land-based sources of litter are likely to lead to reductions in litter in the estuarine environment.
