Event description

Please join us to hear Cawthron marine ecologist Dr Dan Crossett speak about Investigations into seed and shoot-based seagrass restoration in Aotearoa / New Zealand. Alternatively, if you can't join us in person, register to receive a recording of Dr Crossett's presentation instead

Synopsis

Seagrass meadows are an important coastal ecosystem in Aotearoa/New Zealand and around the world. These meadows store carbon in a complex rhizome/sediment matrix, can assist in climate mitigation and improve water quality, are foundation species, and uniquely, are the only marine flowering plant. However, seagrass meadows have drastically declined due to physical disturbances, deteriorating water quality and the changing climate. Our team at Cawthron is leading a research programme called “Restore our Meadows” to investigate low impact, active restoration methods to mitigate seagrass (specifically Zostera muelleri) loss such as seed and shoot-based techniques. Our main objective is to create a simple blueprint to assist other researchers, community groups and iwi in restoring their local seagrass meadow.

Presenter Bio
Dr Dan Crossett is a marine ecologist who focuses on state of the environment monitoring and understanding recruitment dynamics of foundation species, such as seagrass. He has been based at the Cawthron Institute for the past five years. Currently he is part of the Restoration Ecology Team and co-leads Cawthron’s Protecting and Enhancing Aquatic Environments Science Impact Theme working group.

A short Q&A session will follow Dan's presentation. The event will formally conclude at 6.30pm but guests are invited to remain for informal networking over tea/coffee afterwards if they wish.
