The theory of musical topics is now an established framework for the study of musical meaning and expression. Although topics are realised in performance, the relationship between topic theory and performance practice often remains implicit.

Building on the inaugural 2023 event, the Second International Symposium on Musical Topics and Performance Practice brings musicologists, analysts, and performers into closer dialogue. Papers and performance presentations explore the intersections between topical analysis and performance practice, across repertoires from the eighteenth century to the present.
