Come celebrate a successful six months of arts programming at Studio 34 with handmade games and work in various artistic mediums that range from printed words and playable art, to music and dance and performance poetry.

At 7:00 our June art show—FLIP THE SYSTEM, featuring 25 playable miniature pinball games—comes down off the the walls to be played one last time before leaving the studio. Come meet the artists and play their creations that range from aquatic adventures and explorations of nature, to navigating the the perils of city traffic, medical malfeasance, and the devil himself. These games will likely never be seen in any other arcade, and this might be your last chance to play them! You can also see the mini-exhibit about the PinBox 3000, the DIY cardboard technology that made this show possible.

At 8:30 PM, we’ll move our art-cade aside for a few short performances by artists visiting from Texas and Ohio:

Choreographer Marion Ramirez returns to Studio 34 with fellow dancer Alicia Diaz in Marea Roja. Womb/fire/earth, The red syncopated tide, reclaims what's hers. We get out of the way of nature to join its flow and together we pulse through the cycle of life, death and rebirth. Marea Roja is set within a soundscape by Matthew Dixon featuring Rita indiana’s song “Da pa lo do.”

Traveling poet, author, and letterpress publisher Jim Trainer also performs his latest work from his "If I Don't Be There By Morning" Tour. Jim will have letterpressed collections and broadsides to peruse and take home.

This event celebrates the six months of successful arts programming at Studio 34 with the request that you pay what you think it’s worth—any amount is welcome! Studio 34’s arts manager Morgan Andrews will also be embarking on a six-week trip, so consider this as a party to send him off as well.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Puerto Rican dance artist Marion Ramirez is an Assistant Professor at Denison University in Granville, Ohio, where she lives with her 2 children. Her movement research is rooted in her cultural sensibility as a Caribbean artist in the diaspora and informed by the diversity of dance training and performance experiences in Puerto Rico, Cuba, Europe, South Korea, and the US. She was awarded the Reflection: Response Choreographic Commission 2019 for the multi-disciplinary project kNots and Nests in Philadelphia as well as was commissioned to choreograph I see you performed at Philadelphia Museum of Art. Most recently Marion curated and co-created Mareas/Tides along with Ojeya Cruz Banks honoring World Water Day and environmental justice for Puerto Rico.

As a Puerto Rican contemporary dance artist in the diaspora Alicia Díaz's choreographic work speaks to issues of memory and identity, migration, colonialism, and the legacy of slavery. She engages dance as a tool for social justice through acts of collaboration, creating works for concert dance, museums, film, and site-specific locations. She has co-directed several companies including Rubí Theatre in New York City, en la brega dance company, with Esther Ñequi González, and Agua Dulce Dance Theater, with Matthew Thornton. Recent collaborations with Puerto Rican percussionist Héctor “Coco” Barez engage with Afro-Puerto Rican Bomba as a point of reference to investigate cultural memory, resistance, and healing. Alicia is associate professor of dance at The University of Richmond where she received the 2020 Center for Civic Engagement's Community-Engaged Scholarship Award.

Philadelphia native Jim Trainer contributes to Substack, served as columnist for Into The Void and blogged at Going For the Throat for over a decade. Trainer publishes one letterpressed collection every year through Yellow Lark Press. STRIDE is his 8th. As a progenitor of Stand UpTragedy™ he performs regularly throughout the world.
