November is a good time to gather seeds for native grasses/wildflowers

Join Osage ephemeral artist Lydia Cheshewalla and prairie preservationist Alex Barron for an afternoon in the tallgrass prairie near Volland, Kansas, collecting seeds of native grasses and wildflowers, and learning about local ecology.

November is a good time to gather native grass seeds (Big Bluestem, Little Bluestem, Sideoats Grama, Indian Grass, and Switchgrass; and wildflower seeds of Penstemon, Goldenrod, Echinacea, and Bee Balm.

“If you don’t know the flowers, you don’t know the prairie,” says Alex Barron, one of the two leaders of the seed gathering.  He will be joined by Lydia Cheshewall, an Osage artist who is traveling here from Oklahoma to participate.

Participants will learn how to identify prairie plants, what these plants do in their ecosystem, and how to collect and clean their seeds for future propagation.

The event will begin at Volland with a brief orientation, then participants will caravan to the field work site for a few hours of collecting, before returning to Volland for a short demonstration on seed cleaning.

Participants are invited to take home seeds they collect to add to their own gardens or prairie restoration projects.

Participants will be provided with a small kit for gathering seeds. Please bring your own scissors and gloves if possible.

Dress appropriately for hiking in tallgrass, and mind the weather. Snacks will be provided.
