Seed Orchard Planting Days

This event has passed Get tickets

Event description

Join the Bio·R team for a working bee at Frahns Farm to prepare and plant new seeds in our 25 Raised Seed Production Beds at our Seed Orchard.

During the working bee, these beds will be planted with native daisies, lilies, forbs and other non-grasses, to increase Bio·R’s ability to harvest large quantities of seed of these species to use in our landscape-scale habitat recreation projects.

It is important to increase the seed availability of these species because they are integral components of complex habitats but are often missing in standard revegetation techniques. We have a maximum capacity of 10 volunteers per day, so please book soon if you don’t want to miss out!

This project is supported by the Murraylands and Riverland Landscape Board through funding from the landscape levies, and from the generosity of our donors.

Dates: Saturday 27 May & Sunday 28 May
Times:
9:00am - 4:00pm
What to wear/bring: Gardening gloves, food and water for the day, appropriate field apparel for all potential weather (long pants and closed-toe shoes, hat and sunscreen, wet weather gear).

About the Bio·R Frahns Farm Seed Production Area

Large quantities of seed of a diverse mix are needed to re-establish complex native habitats on cleared farmland.

This area produces millions of seeds of over 40 native plant species annually, including grasses, herbs, lillies, and small shrubs. These plants form the understorey of woodlands.

The quantities of seeds harvested at this facility annually are used to direct seed about 20 hectares of farmland with understorey plants.

The Seed Production Area has two components: the in-ground plantings in weed matting, and the steel raised beds where different species are grown. This allows for more efficient harvesting of seeds for the different species.

BioR acknowledges the generous support of the Murraylands and Riverland Landscape Board and Nigel Charman in providing funding for the raised beds.
