The second Selden Society lecture for 2024, Robert Menzies at the Bar will be presented by the Hon Justice Edelman, High Court of Australia.
Shortly after retirement from politics, Sir Robert Menzies said that ‘[p]olitics proved to be my greatest duty. But the law remained my first love’. The Hon Justice Edelman will consider the extraordinary impact Menzies had on the law as author, barrister, Attorney-General for the State of Victoria, Attorney General of the Commonwealth and Prime Minister of Australia.Â
In examining the influence of Menzies, there is a sense of how much more he might even have contributed had he not departed the legal profession. An interesting contrast arises between Menzies as a lawyer and his tutor, mentor and friend, Sir Owen Dixon.
About the speaker
The Hon Justice Edelman was appointed to the High Court of Australia in 2017 and is a former judge of the Federal Court of Australia, the Supreme Court of Western Australia, barrister, and a Fellow of Keble College and Professor of the Law of Obligations at the University of Oxford.
All lectures will be held in the Banco Court, Queen Elizabeth II Courts of Law, level 3, 415 George Street, Brisbane.
The lectures are free to attend.Â
