The Pioneers of Semaphore Park
Event description
Semaphore Park, located on the Le Fevre Peninsula, has a rich history characterized by the resilience and resourcefulness of its early pioneers. Just a century ago, this area was considered "country," and its inhabitants lived a lifestyle that was deeply connected to the land. Without modern conveniences such as electricity, gas, water, or sewerage systems, these pioneers relied on their ingenuity to thrive. Howard Speed, the last surviving member from before World War II, vividly recalls the community's self-sufficient way of life, offering invaluable insights into this bygone era. Meanwhile, Ron Ritter’s research focuses on the region further south, around Grange, shedding light on how these pioneering communities adapted and evolved over time. Together, Howard Speed's personal recollections and Ron Ritter's scholarly findings paint a vivid picture of the pioneering spirit that once defined Semaphore Park and its surroundings.
