Description

Join the Northern Beaches Council Environment and Resilience Team for a free and fun Seniors Week planting morning at the beautiful North Narrabeen dunes. Spend the morning outdoors, get your hands sandy and help us boost the health of this iconic coastal landscape.

This event is designed for seniors, with the option to bring grandchildren along for a shared outdoor adventure. All children must be accompanied by a responsible senior for the entire event, and children cannot attend without a senior. This ensures everyone stays safe and allows the day to stay focused on planting, learning and enjoying nature together.

You’ll be planting native species that support dune stability and local wildlife. The activity involves walking up to 100 metres on sand with a slight incline and using hand tools to dig and plant, so a reasonable level of fitness is recommended.

Expect fresh air, friendly faces and a chance to learn more about the unique coastal ecology of North Narrabeen. It’s a great way to celebrate Seniors Week while making a positive impact on the environment.

This event is free but has limited capacity so registration is essential.

FAQs

  • Do I need to be a senior to attend?

Yes. This event is part of Seniors Week and is designed specifically for seniors. Seniors are welcome to bring their grandkids, but all primary participants must be seniors.

If you are not a senior and would like to take part in a planting activity, please reach out to our team to learn about local Bushcare volunteering opportunities.

  • Can I attend even if I don’t have grandkids?

Absolutely. Seniors attending on their own are warmly welcomed. The day is designed to be inclusive, social and enjoyable for everyone.

  • Do I need to be a Northern Beaches resident to attend?

Not necessarily. The event is open to all seniors, however places are limited and preference will be given to Northern Beaches residents.

  • What should I bring?

Please wear closed-toe shoes and sun-safe clothing such as a hat, long sleeves, and long pants. We also recommend bringing a water bottle. All planting tools and materials will be provided.

  • Is the event free?

Yes. There is no cost to attend.

  • Can I bring my own gardening tools?

You’re welcome to bring your own gloves if you prefer, but all necessary tools will be supplied.

  • What level of fitness is required?

We want everyone to have a safe and enjoyable experience, and it’s important to note that this activity takes place on soft sand with uneven terrain and a slight incline. Because of these conditions, the event is unfortunately not suitable for people with mobility limitations or those who use wheelchairs, walkers or other mobility aids. The planting tasks also involve bending, digging and moving across sandy ground, which can be challenging without stable footing.

  • Can children attend without a senior?

No. All children must be accompanied by a responsible senior for the entire duration of the event. This is not a drop‑off activity, and children cannot attend on their own. This requirement ensures that young participants are safely supervised and allows our team to focus on delivering an enjoyable and meaningful planting experience.
