Sensory Processing: Understanding the Eight Senses (Foundation)
Description
This foundational session will introduce sensory processing and how sensory differences can affect regulation, attention, communication and access to learning. Participants will explore the eight sensory systems - visual, auditory, tactile, olfactory, gustatory, proprioceptive, vestibular and interoceptive - and consider how sensory seeking, sensory avoidance and sensory overload may present in educational settings.
The session will also introduce the Pyramid of Learning as a useful way of understanding how sensory and movement foundations can support higher-level learning, behaviour and participation. The session aims to build confidence in recognising sensory needs while avoiding the assumption that every behaviour is sensory, and to identify realistic, low-tech, universal strategies that support regulation and engagement.
This module has been accredited by the NCFE and can be considered when working towards the NCFE Award. Participants are required to complete five modules, including the mandatory module.
