Event description

You're invited to watch our Second Year Actors in their Graduation Play Separate Tables, written by Terence Rattigan and directed by Shane Anthony & Janine Watson. This is the final play production for our 2024 Sydney Actors School Graduating Ensemble. Don't miss out! Performances will be held from Wednesday 27th November - Saturday 30th November.

Director's Statement:

In Separate Tables, Terence Rattigan explores the intricate depths of loneliness, desire, repression and the deep-seated longing for connection—themes that resonate through the characters’ interactions and internal struggles. Set against the backdrop of post-WWII Britain, the play examines class and politics as silent yet powerful forces shaping the characters' choices, biases, and social limitations. The Beauregard Hotel, where these isolated souls meet, becomes a microcosm of a nation grappling with the remnants of war and changing societal norms. Each character’s personal isolation reflects the country's own uncertainty as it redefines itself amid postwar realities.

For the students at Sydney Actors School, this text has offered a demanding and enriching experience, calling on their training to embody complex characters who each conceal wounds beneath their polite exteriors. Rattigan's text requires a nuanced portrayal that integrates vocal and physical training, emotional truth, and clear, specific character objectives. By embodying these layered personas, students learn to work with subtext, build empathy, and bring depth to their roles, resulting in performances that are both vulnerable and powerful. Rattigan’s work not only challenges the actors but provides audiences with a window into a uniquely British experience of longing and resilience.
