September Bankstown Poetry Slam ft. Melanie Mununggurr

Event description

Welcome to Australia's largest regular poetry slam!

This month, Bankstown Poetry Slam is free and will be held at WSU’s new Bankstown campus!

We are so excited that our September slam is in partnership with the Writing and Society Research Centre (as part of their Writers in Parramatta series) and that it's being supported by Western Sydney Creative.

They're totally covering the cost of your ticket, and paying our unreal poets and artists to come on stage and deliver their best material, straight to your eyeballs and earholes! (unnecessarily gross, but there it is!)

We're even MORE excited that our feature artist this month is the 2018 Australian Poetry Slam champion, Melanie Mununggurr!

Melanie is a Djapu mother, poet, story teller and performer. Her writing is all encompassing of her identity as Yolngu, as a queer mother, and the triumphs and struggles of nuerodiversity, and maintaining connections to land and culture. Melanie uses her language to decolonise the literary and performance space through the use of Dhuwal language weaved throughout her poems. Melanie has book of poetry to be published in the near future and has recently begun working on her first spoken word album.

Please join us at our new time of 6:30 pm!

Your ticket gets you access to the slam, fresh watermelon, world class poetry and some bad dad jokes, courtesy of our MC Bilal.

For rules on participating in the slam, please see below.

🍉 If you are intending to sign up to perform at the slam, please book a ticket and arrive at 6:15 pm to sign up at the door. We generally do not offer free artist tickets but if you you have special circumstances/are experiencing financial difficulty, please get in touch so that we can issue you a free ticket.

🍉 Regular slam rules apply: No age restrictions/ STRICT 3 minute time limit (try to limit poem introductions)/ no props or music/ poetry must be your original work.

🍉 The top 4 scoring artists will be granted a spot at the Grand Slam.

🍉 Please note that signing up does not guarantee a performance spot. We have a lottery system in place whereby we randomly draw names so that it is fair for everyone, given the high sign up numbers!

Poetry aficionados, appreciators of HipHop and literature that beats with a thunderous heart — you absolutely do not want to miss this!

Huge thank you to the Writing and Society Research Centre for organising venue support for us this month at WSU Bankstown City Campus!

Please note that BPS is a volunteer run organisation so any extra donations go a long way in helping us support our artists! Thank you for your generosity ❤️‍🔥
