September Girls' Night Book Club: Klara and the Sun by Kazuo Ishiguro

Hi! We’re so pleased to meet you. We created Girls’ Night Book Club because we wanted a place to talk about our fave books, music and art created by women. We love classic literature, weird books and strange stories - the messier, the better. And we think life is too short to read a dull book, so we’re here to help you sort the treasures from the trash.

Keep an eye on our IG Stories - our community decides! We ask for your suggestions each month, then shortlist to 4 options. You can vote in the poll - whichever story wins is that month’s Girls’ Night Book Club. Each month, we’ll focus on a different genre; could be romance, mystery, thriller, sci-fi or fantasy etc. See the calendar for details.

We meet monthly, usually around 6pm at a local wine bar. It’s a cosy place where you can chat about your fave books over delicious food & drinks. Our book club has a very relaxed atmosphere. We start with the book and then often move onto other things - other books we’ve read or want to read, our fave TV or movies, local events or concerts.

Nah. We get it - sometimes life gets in the way (or you just reeeeeally don’t vibe with this month’s book). We don’t mind if you’ve read the book - this is place to enjoy chats with fellow book lovers. Whether you’ve only read 3 pages, skimmed the book or just seen a movie adaptation, you’re more than welcome!

Of course! Most people come alone and very quickly make new friends. This is a very open and welcoming group of girls.

Our refund policy is only valid 21 days prior to the event, since it's difficult to fill waitlist spots after this timeline as new guests don't have enough time to read the chosen book. This is to ensure we have enough attendees for a lively discussion. It is also to respect the host, and other guest's time.

If you can no longer make it to an event you’ve booked in for, please let us know so that we can give your spot to someone else!

Book club is an intimate, exclusive meeting and we very carefully plan out all the details - the venue, the book, the discussion questions, any dietaries requirements. Our goal is to make sure everyone has a great time. 

It's different everytime! We meet at the wine bar, get some snacks and drinks. Some people like to take detailed notes, discuss specific passages, and ask theoretical questions about the plot structure, the themes, the characterisation and development, the style, etc. Likewise, if somebody wants to simply talk about their opinions of the book off the top of their head, that's great too. Sometimes, all we do gather, talk about the book for 5 minutes, and then yap about life in general for the next two hours,

Questions usually look like:

• Did you enjoy it or not, and why?

• Which characters did you like or dislike?

• How was the writing style?

• How does it stack up to other books in that genre or from that author?

By far the most important element of our book club is not sharing your thoughts, but learning from others'. The great thing about being in a book club of 15 people is that you'll get 14 opinions on a story that you read and which you can only form the thoughts of one person about. They're a great tool to help consume literature in a new and enlightening way.
