On behalf of the Institute for Innovation in Biotechnology and the Bioscience Enterprise Master's Programme, you are warmly invited to the seventh evening forum in our 2026 networking series.
In this special event, we join forces with BIOSCI736, a Synthetic Biology post-graduate course, to bring you a panel discussion on one of the hottest biotechnology topics in New Zealand.
Topic: Commercializing synthetic biology: going from idea to market-ready synthetic biology product
Synthetic biology sits at the intersection of engineering and biology, and the Government has heralded it as one of the next frontiers in New Zealand's bioeconomy. But what does it actually take to bring synthetic biology technologies to market?
Join three leaders working at the coalface of synthetic biology commercialisation as we lift the lid on the reality behind the hype:
Dr. Damien Fleetwood (CEO, Biotelliga): Under Damien’s leadership, Biotelliga has become one of NZ’s standout biotech success stories. This success is based on leveraging fungal endophytes and synthetic biology to pioneer sustainable crop protection technologies. Their motto says it all - “harnessing nature’s genius”.
Dr. Ipshita Mandal-Johnson (Global Bio-Strategy Consultant): With a background in synthetic biology research, Ipshita is now a synthetic biology consultant and international bio-fund leader. She has her finger on the pulse of global and domestic synthetic biology trends and is an advisor to MBIE on synthetic biology.
Dr. Jonathan Good (CEO & Co-founder, Scentian Bio): Jonathan has helped lead Scentian Bio from basic research discoveries to successful spin-out. This involves a path less travelled, with Scentian Bio pioneering a non-microbial approach that converts insect smell receptors into ultra-sensitive biosensors.
Finally, to add extra spice, we will share two exciting new synthetic biology initiatives launched at the University of Auckland.
