Sewing Machines 101 Workshop

Do you have a sewing machine that you've been meaning to learn to use? Have you tried using videos and feel like you need hands-on support to get the hang of your machine?

In this workshop, we will cover the basics about your sewing machine, including how to wind a bobbin, how to thread the machine, and what the basic settings on your machine mean. Once you set your machine up, we will practice sewing a straight line and backstitching. You will walk away from this workshop with a scrunchie that you made yourself using these basic sewing skills!

This is a BYOM (Bring Your Own Machine) workshop and sewing machines will not be provided. Participants will need to bring all necessary machine accessories to participate- pedal, power cord, bobbin, machine needle and sewing machine manual (if available).

This workshop is appropriate for ages 11+ only. Minors do not have to be accompanied by a parent or guardian during the workshop. Adults must come inside to drop their minor off with the workshop instructor. Drop off begins 10 minutes before the scheduled start time, and everyone must be picked up at the scheduled end of the workshop.

Meet the Instructor

Cassandra Najera is a sewist who wants to support making crafting and creating accessible to everyone! Cassandra grew up and lives in South Austin and has been sewing for 3 years. She uses second-hand fabric to create clothes and accessories for herself and her loved ones. She is also starting to sell her creations at @‌laurel.goods Outside of sewing, Cassandra works in the college access and success field and loves karaoke.
