    Educational Event: Sexual Consent in Victorian Criminal Law

    Parnell's Barristers List, law firm Doogue & George and BottledSnail Productions present the educational event "Exploring the topic of Sexual Consent in Victorian Criminal Law"  in anticipation of BottledSnail's next production, the modern play "Consent" by Nina Raine. 

    This event will take place at The Metropolitan Hotel located at 265 Williams Street Melbourne VIC from 6pm to 8pm on 19 September 2024 and is free but attendees are required to register.

    Hear presentations on the topic of Sexual Assault in Victorian Criminal Law from two experianced Victorian lawyers, Zoe Broughton, an experienced criminal law barrister from the Victorian Bar and Sophie Parsons, an experienced criminal lawyer from Doogue & George. A scene will also be performed over the course of the evening from the modern UK play "Consent" by Nina Raine which explores the topic of "consent" in a fictional London sexual assualt trial and modern day relationsips. BottledSnail's production of the play opens at Chapel Off Chapel on 31 October 2024.

    Some refreshments and finger food will be available on the night.

    Zoe Broughton is an experienced criminal law barrister having been called to the bar in 2009. Since then, she has also served as a senior public defender at Victoria Legal Aid for some years, before returning to the private bar. Zoe has experience appearing in Supreme and County Court trials, pleas, appeals and bail applications, contested committals and matters involving the Crimes (Mental Impairment and Unfitness to be Tried) Act 1997 and Serious Sex Offenders (Detention and Supervision) Act 2009.

    Sophie Parsons has extensive experience in complex criminal defence matters in Victoria and the Northern Territory. Sophie provides advice and representation at the charge and pre-charge stages of proceedings in the adult and youth jurisdictions. As an advocate, Sophie has appeared in bail applications, contested hearings, committals, jury trials, pleas, and appeals. As an extension of her role as an advocate and Partner at Doogue + George, Sophie facilitates the lawyer training program at the firm and enjoys external presentations with legal organisations.
