We’ll explore sun angles throughout the year, the best placement of shade trees, vines, and windbreaks, and practical solutions for renters. Led by Kat Lavers, discover how thoughtful garden design can lower indoor and outdoor temperatures while creating a more comfortable and resilient home.

About Kat Lavers:

Kat is the gardener and designer behind The Plummery, a 1/14th acre urban permaculture system in Melbourne's north that produces almost all the vegies, herbs, fruit and eggs consumed by the household! She’s realised that with good design, growing lots of food is possible even with limited time, space and resources.

Afternoon tea will be provided, so please note dietary needs during registration

The Banyule Loves...Workshop Series explores the lost art of sustainable, climate-resilient living. The series celebrates the things about Banyule which our community loves- from gardening to connecting to Country to saving money on our energy bills. These workshops will upskill community members while connecting participants to like-minded neighbours. Attendees are entered in a drawing for a prize for participating in each workshop, with the drawing held at the annual wrap-up celebration and showcase event in November. Each attendee will receive a certification of completion for the workshops they attend.

This workshop takes place during the Kulin season of Guling in August. Temperatures will start to rise as cold season is coming to an end, however early on we’ll have the coldest nights of the year. Guling (orchids) and Muyan (Silver Wattles) are flowering. Bulen-Bulen (Superb Lyrebird) males perform the last of their courtship displays and Gurrbora (Koalas) begin mating, with males yelling at night. Ae-noke (caterpillars) of the Common Brown butterfly feed on grasses at night.
