Shared Value Masterclasses

The masterclasses provide an education pathway for participants to build a deeper understanding of shared value theory and application by exploring real-world case studies. In our 2022 series, we will be strengthening the HBS academic underpinning of shared value theory, by incorporating HBS case studies and seminal articles – drawing out shared value principles and connecting the theory to the practice with the help of relevant company protagonists who can provide further insight, regional context and shared value work in progress.

Masterclass One: Shared Value as a Business Strategy

Led by Senior Harvard Lecturer and co-author of the seminal 'Creating Shared Value' article, Mark Kramer, this masterclass serves as a valuable pre-requisite to participating in any (or all) of the masterclasses. In this session we will demonstrate the key drivers for shared value as a competitive business strategy, drawing upon the global HBS Discovery case study and its application in the Australian Vitality context with AIA Australia's Head of Wellness, Candice Smith.

This session will help to understand:

The interconnected nature of business and society, shifting from a cost vs opportunity mindset
How unmet societal needs can unlock new value and competitive advantage
How shared value thinking influences new business models and program development

Preparation

To ensure you come equipped to get the most out of the masterclass, participants will:

Establish a foundational understanding of shared value with access to 30 minute interactive eModule
Receive case study materials
Participate in pre-session discussion group (9.00am - 9.45am, immediately prior to masterclass)
Have plenty of opportunities to ask experts and practitioners questions in the masterclass.

Expert Teacher: Mark Kramer, Senior Harvard Lecturer, Co-author of 'Creating Shared Value'

Mark Kramer co-founded FSG, the consulting arm of the Shared Value Initiative in the US, with Harvard Business School Professor Michael Porter in 1999. He co-authored the Harvard Business Review seminal article "Creating Shared Value" and Stanford Social Innovation Review seminal articles "Collective Impact" and "Catalytic Philanthropy.

Speaker: Candice Smith, Head of Wellness, AIA Australia

Candice is a seasoned executive in the Health and Life Insurance industry with a deep global experience of over a decade in behavioural economics-based wellness. She is currently the Head of Wellness for AIA Australia and New Zealand, having previously held the role at Discovery Vitality, the world’s largest behavioural economics-based wellness business with ~18 million customers globally.

She was involved in international expansion projects into the UK, US, Australia, Asia and Europe through Vitality’s strategic partnerships with market leading life insurance business globally. In Vitality, she has been responsible for end-to-end conceptualisation and execution of a number of key strategic initiatives, shaping the innovation, product design and relevant analytics, developing the business plan, and driving the implementation.
