About Jake

Jake Kīanō Skinner is an Ōtautahi Christchurch born multi-instrumentalist who generates soundscapes that relax and create space for creativity. He loves creating atmospheres that encourage deep contemplation with his ethereal approach to guitar, an instrument he’s now played for 20 years.

Jake is of Ngāti Rangitihi descent, with whakapapa to Tama-te-Kapua – commander of the great Te Arawa waka.

His music weaves the sounds of taonga pūoro (traditional Māori instruments) into his acoustic guitar, a practice that he nurtured during successive lockdowns through the pandemic, diving deeply into the customs and stories of these instruments.

Jake has been mentored through this journey by Grammy award-winning taonga pūoro practitioner/composer Jerome Kavanagh Poutama (Pūoro Jerome). At his home marae, Rangiaohia, at Matatā, Jake contributes pūoro in the sacred setting of tangihanga (funeral custom). He acknowledges his elders who have inspired him "down the road" towards his Māoritanga.

Jake’s recent projects include creative collaborations with musician, producer and composer Riki Gooch (Trinity Roots), Australasia-based sound artist Jo Burzynska and a 2022 album release with Noel Meek entitled Whakaaro.

Jake studied Sound Engineering and has been recording and remixing his own and others’ music for over a decade. In recent years he has found his soundscapes reaching into spaces where physical movement (such as the practice of yoga), sound and vibration coalesce.

He says: “The sound journey gives people the space to relax and process.”

Jake’s music can be found on Spotify, Band Camp, Sound Cloud and Apple Music.
