Shiitake Log Making
Event description
Come and make your own shiitake log with Bellarine Fungi! This is one of nature's gifts that keep on giving: a successfully inoculated log will produce shiitake mushrooms for 5-7 years, flushing regularly throughout the year with some of the tastiest mushrooms out there.
The process is easy and suitable for children, and involves the following steps:
1) Drill holes in a log
2) Hammer in inoculated wooden dowels
3) Seal ends of log and all dowel ends with wax to prevent contamination and moisture loss
4) Incubate in a shady spot, keeping moist
5) After about 12 months you should see mushrooms sprouting from the log!
All materials and tools will be provided, and one full-price ticket entitles you to one log. Logs from last year's production run will be available for sale if you want to have mushrooms now while you wait for your own log to start fruiting next year!
Please note the actual process of making a log is quite quick but you may want to have a farm tour, learn more about the mushroom life cycle, or make some more logs for our farm stockpile, so allow plenty of time to hang around :)
