Eastmint present a triple bill with Ngunnawal Country based singer/composer Shoeb Ahmad alongside local experimental songwriters Sui Zhen and Imogen Cygler.

Each of these artists has pushed the envelope of exploratory songwriting, and will use this opportunity continue to expand their practice as composers, performers and innovators.

Shoeb Ahmad

Based on Ngunnawal Country, singer/composer Sia Ahmad has been a vital player in Australia's underground music scene for a decade or more. Keen curator of DIY events, prolific recording artist, Art Music Award winner and one time member of electronic jazz outfit Tangents, she's previously collaborated with the likes of Gwenno and the Australian Art Orchestra. Performing under solo-music moniker SHOEB AHMAD, Sia interlaces the sounds of familiar rock instruments in idiosyncratic ways to create richly personal, indelible soundscapes. Her recent solo record "double checks against the corner" was released last year on No Gold, the new label curated by Angus Andrew from Liars. A song cycle that weaves a narrative around relationship breakdown, reconciliation and parenthood.

Sui Zhen

Becky Sui Zhen Freeman is a Chinese-Malaysian Australian artist, musician and creative producer working across audio, visual and interactive mediums. She lives and works on unceded Wurundjeri land.

Her musical project Sui Zhen examines loss on multiple levels, from the death of loved ones to the widespread societal tendency to disappear within the 1’s and 0’s of modern life's tech-driven rush.

From the banal pastel dystopia of the Secretly Susan era’s music videos to the invention of Linda, a ghostly apparition in the Losing, Linda LP, Becky’s cinematic, surreal and staged landscapes situate her unique take on pop music within its own uncanny terrain.

Becky’s most recent release is a collaboration with Chinese-Australian guzheng player and composer Mindy Meng Wang 王萌. Their debut collaborative record Origin of You centres around the continual shift in an individual’s understanding of identity and of the self – coming to terms with who you are, where you are from, and where you will go. It is about birth, life and death. It is also about transformation: from daughter to woman, woman to mother, outsider to friend.

Outside her musical projects, Becky hosts a monthly show on NTS Radio and works as the Sound and Music Supervisor for Art Processors. In this role, she collaborates with arts and cultural institutions to meaningfully incorporate sound, voice and music into the visitor experience, with a decolonial imperative.

Imogen Cygler

In this iteration Imogen will be joined by Flora Carbo.

Highly respected for her multi-disciplinary compositional work for actors, playwrights, musicians, filmmakers and more, Cygler released her debut EP Wrocław in 2019 to acclaim from the local art-folk scene. In 2023, she released a collaborative EP with R. P. Downie, titled Yoga, as well as Night Lamp, from a new project with Theo Carbo called My Liege. Cygler has worked with artists including Jacob Diamond, Way Dynamic, Sunfruits, Juice Webster, and Jade Alice. Cygler was also the producer of Isobel Caldwell’s 2022 album Duty of Care. Her debut album, 'Sometimes Strangers' cements Cygler as a singular, progressive voice in the Australian alternative-music scene. This album is a telescope into a planetarium of Cygler’s own. Decorous and imaginative, Cygler proffers a new frontier for conceptually-driven music that is both playful and profound.

Flora Carbo

Flora Carbo is a saxophonist, composer and music leader from Naarm (Melbourne, Australia). Her unique practice creates novel musical environments that connect people through improvisation, composition and conceptual works, led by her explorations into the vocal qualities of the alto saxophone.

Her work traverses settings, methods and scales, with works devised for major festival stages at Melbourne International Jazz Festival, Canberra International Music Festival, Phoenix Central Park’s Strata Festival, Amersfoort Jazz Festival, and alongside luminaries of Australian jazz and improvised music like Barney McAll and Andrea Keller. Her creativity grounded in a constant flow of collaboration amongst a tight-knit generation of leading young Australian artists in Naarm, with regular projects and small gigs for new ideas alongside uncategorizable original musicians like Helen Svoboda, Niran Dasika, Iran Sanadzadeh, Eitan Ritz, her brother Theo Carbo, and many others.

ACCESSIBILITY

Eastmint is accessible via wheelchair through the non main entrance, there is a small sliding door frame that we can place a ramp over the top of. Please get in touch if you require this option via email eastmintrecords@gmail.com. We regret we are unable to provide accessible toilet facilities at this time, although there is wheelchair access to the hand washing sink which is a private space. Closest accessible toilets located at the Peacock Hotel 150m away. There are no windows that are openable in the space but we will open the double doors between sets for airflow. The space is quite cavernous with high ceilings and is an un-renovated warehouse so not tightly sealed. We use a HEPA filter rated for 50m2 but the space is closer to 100m2.
