What makes this workshop different?

This is not just a talk about commercial photography.

Oliver will start by walking through his own experience executing client briefs, including how to think about rates, usage, licensing, creative direction, client expectations, production, deliverables and the difference between making images for yourself and making images that need to work for someone else.

Then, he’ll sit down with three people who regularly work with photographers from the client and agency side.

You’ll hear from:

An advertising Creative Director
A senior creative who has worked across national campaigns, agency briefs and commercial image-making. This conversation will look at how agencies think, what makes a photographer useful on set, what clients are really asking for in a brief, and how creative ideas survive the pressure of production.

A client-side commercial creative lead
A brand and content leader who works with photographers across digital, content and campaign work. This conversation will focus on what brands actually need from photographers, how content is judged internally, what makes imagery usable, and why strong creative work still needs to serve a commercial outcome.

A fashion brand and content specialist
A fashion-side creative with experience shaping brand image, campaign direction and visual content for Australian labels. This conversation will look at how photographers are chosen, what fashion brands look for, how visual direction is developed, and what makes imagery feel right for a brand.

Together, these conversations will give attendees a clearer understanding of what happens before, during and after a commercial shoot, not just from the photographer’s side, but from the people who are briefing, hiring, reviewing and using the work.

The live brief

To make the session practical, Oliver will also be given a live creative brief on the night.

He will not see it beforehand.

Everyone in the room will receive the brief before he does, so attendees can understand what the client is asking for, what the images need to achieve, and what pressure sits inside the job before the shoot even begins.

From there, Oliver will work through the process in real time: reading the brief, asking the right questions, identifying the priorities, making creative decisions, directing the set and executing a beauty-focused shoot in front of the room.

This builds directly on Oliver’s recent work rebuilding his beauty portfolio, using beauty as a way to show how a photographer can move from personal portfolio development into more structured, client-facing work.

It is one thing to talk about briefs.

It is another to respond to one live.
