These workshops are for ages 13 - 18 years old and will take place Wednesday 13 - Thursday 14 April - 10am - 3pm. Ideally all participants will be available to attend both days however if you can only attend one, that's ok! If you are attending both days, please register for each day.

Parents/carers please be advised that young people will need to bring snacks and lunch with them each day.

By registering for this workshop series parents/carers are providing their consent for participants to be taken on a walking excursion around The Rocks to gather inspiration as well as consenting for participants images to be used for exhibition display, archival and promotional activities.

SHOPFRONT FILMMAKING WORKSHOPS:

Film On The Rocks. A two-day workshop inviting young people into the exciting world of cinema! Learn the art of visual storytelling, the basics of using a camera, and the secrets to establishing a captivating atmosphere on screen. With that knowledge in tow, walk the streets of The Rocks district, and use your newfound tools to capture hidden tales of mystery, romance, terror and adventure!

WHAT WILL WORKSHOPS INVOLVE:

Workshop Day 1 will include getting-to-know-you games, running through the basics of storyboarding and visual storytelling, and how to call a shot. We'd then take a wander around The Rocks to find places of interest that evoke an atmosphere and inspire a response from the young people, then they'd mindmap and develop/pitch ideas for their films. Using Shopfront's equipment, we'd split into teams and film our pieces.
Workshop Day 2 will include filming and editing, showing the young'uns how to put their films together.

DAVID MOLLOY is a multidisciplinary artist engaged in stage and screen. Since graduating from the University of Wollongong (BCA Dean's Scholar) and the Australian Film Television & Radio School, he has worked at home and abroad as a writer, performer, AV designer and videographer. He has written two feature films, three feature documentaries and a play, Monument, which debuted at the 2018 Sydney Fringe Festival. Most recently, David got to combine his writing, directing and video design skills for Shopfront Arts Co-Op's Senior Ensemble Production HIT Reset which he co-directed with James Peter Brown.

David's AV design work includes: Tiny Universe (Shopfront, 2021), Natural Order (Milk Crate Theatre, 2019); Monument (Gom Jabbar, 2018); The Forest Unyielding (Self-Help Arts, 2016); Machine (Eclective Productions, 2015); and Carly & Troy Do A Doll's House (His Three Daughters, 2013). In 2020, he acted as cinematographer and editor to convert Shopfront's Senior Ensemble production Planet B (dir. Miranda Middleton) to film.

Alongside workshop facilitation, David provides videography to creative businesses through Irony Mark Films. He has two dachshunds and they are long, terrible beasts.
