Be Free, Be Linux
Tasman District Library
Richmond, New Zealand
Event description
Be Free Be Linux is a short introduction to the Linux operating
system. There will be practical demonstrations and plenty of
opportunities to try out things for yourselves and ask any questions
that you may have.
Among other things, during the course you will:
- Get a taste of different versions of Linux.
- Learn how to install and upgrade Linux software and how to find and install new applications.
- Be introduced to the command line and get a flavour of how you can tweak a system to make it suit your needs instead of having to be restricted by design choices that others have made for you.
- Understand the origins of open-source software, how it works and why it is reliable.
- Learn what an operating system is and how the various systems we use today appeared.
You are encouraged to bring your own laptop and a USB stick. Let us know if this is not possible. The USB stick will allow you to try Linux before deciding whether you wish to commit to it.
