Grant Stevens
South Australia Police Commissioner - Grant Stevens APM LEM, has been a part of the South Australia Police for 44 years and was appointed Commissioner of Police in 2015. As Commissioner, he is responsible for the safety and security of 1.8 million South Australians, across an area of over one million square kilometres. He is responsible for a budget of $1.5 Billion, and more than 6,000 police officers and staff. Through his career, prior to taking on management and executive roles, Grant worked patrols, CIB, Major Crimes, Drug Squad, Undercover, Intelligence, Training and project management. Grant has developed and delivered many of SAPOL’s most significant operational and strategic policing and business reform initiatives. These include structural and technological reform, development of new capabilities, and wide-reaching cultural reform aimed at achieving gender equity and eliminating discrimination and harassment in the workplace. Grant has well established credentials in national leadership roles addressing organised crime, terrorism, cybercrime, family and domestic violence, sexual crimes, and road safety. He is a member of several national policing boards and is the Chair of the Australia New Zealand Policing Advisory Agency. He has been influential in State policy and legislation reform, particularly in relation to road safety, domestic and sexual violence and child exploitation. As Commissioner, Grant has led the State through major emergencies including the statewide blackout, severe weather events, floods, bushfires and COVID19. Earlier this year, Grant was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by the University of South Australia for his contribution to public safety in SA. A well respected community leader, Grant is the Chair of Operation Flinders Foundation, an organisation that uses adventure therapy to transform the lives of teenagers, particularly those facing challenges. He is also Patron of the South Australia Police Legacy, South Australia Police Historical Society, and the Adelaide Football League. He also has a long standing personal commitment to supporting cancer research, prevention and treatment. Grant is the first to admit that while he holds the reigns in SAPOL, the real boss of the Stevens family is his amazing wife, Emma. Parents to five children and two miniature dachshunds, they have a busy life that they take on as a team – with Emma being the captain and Grant a ‘required player'
