Event description

This year, Unitec’s School of Architecture is proud to present Woman as Maker at the Festival of Architecture a celebration of 10 years of women designing and crafting objects that shape our built environment.

The exhibition will feature outstanding work from our academic kaimahi; Min Hall, Magdalena Garbarczyk, Ainsley O’Connell, and Jeanette Budget. We will also showcase inspiring projects from our ākonga: Alyssa Haley, Alice Couchman, Gemma Campbell, and Kyah Suckling.

Selected student work from the past decade highlights the drive and creativity of Unitec’s female ākonga and kaimahi in building and innovating. Projects range from bespoke bookshelf designs fabricated for Ngākōroa School to digitally crafted installations, such as the Auranga Performance Container (image attached). Cultural contributions include the Mehrab for Al Hikmah Trust. In the sustainability space, the work also showcases a review of upcycled Abodo offcuts, reflecting a commitment to environmentally conscious design.

Lecturer-led projects from courses such as Glow at ArtweekResource MattersDigital Fabrication, and the Gender Elective, as well as previous Architecture Week events, will also be on display, showcasing the breadth and depth of our curriculum and the leadership of our female staff.

Visitors will also be invited to engage with an interactive structure sponsored by Creality 3D Printers. You’ll have the opportunity to take home a 3D-printed shingle or leave a personal message in support of the women who continue to shape our profession. Our kaimahi will be available to discuss the role of 3D printing in architecture and share insights into its evolving impact.

Gina Hochstein will be leading this exhibition. She will be supported by Yusef Patel, Carl Salas and Vaughan Shepherd.
