Showing And Telling In Fiction with Nicole Hayes

So often we’re told “show, don’t tell” in our writing, but what does that mean, and is it always true?

In this course, we will break down what is meant by “show, don’t tell”, what it looks like, how to apply it and when - including when not to. Award winning author, Nicole Hayes, will draw on examples of when it works, when it doesn’t. Through guided exercises and handy tips, Nicole will guide participants in how to construct dynamic scenes that serve your story, and bring out your best writing.

In this workshop, participants will learn more about:

• When does it work, and when doesn’t it?
• How to apply this idea to write dynamic scenes
• Tips on language choice and specificity
• Bringing it all together to serve your story

 

Format

This is an in-person workshop with a focus on writing craft; it will be held at State Library of Queensland. This workshop is designed for emerging writers and is suitable for writers of all levels.

 

About Nicole

Nicole Hayes is an award-winning author and podcaster. Her books have won or shortlisted in multiple awards, including NSW Premier’s Literary Awards and CBCAs. She’s co-writer of the only AFL-licensed junior fiction series, and she is a founding member of the groundbreaking, all female AFL podcast, The Outer Sanctum. She is undertaking a PhD at Deakin University where she also teaches Creative Writing.
