Shunpike Percussion Sessions: Afrocuban Carnaval with José Rojas
Event description
Join José Rojas for another exciting series of classes! Open to all levels of experience, including those new to drumming.
Yes, once again, Afro-Latin percussion takes over the Shunpike sessions. We're delighted to be working with Edinburgh-based Chilean percussionist José Rojas from el Taller.
This time the focus will be the Afrocuban carnival music, CONGA!!
This old and popular carnival genre from Cuba features interlocking cowbells, driving bombó bass drums, and tumbadoras (conga hand drums) providing flavour and energy - always guided by the clave.
These classes offer something for everyone, whether you are new to drumming, are focused on developing your hand-drumming technique or are an experienced drummer looking to broaden your skills and knowledge of Afrocuban styles.
José is an experienced percussionist and educator, and a passionate researcher deeply immersed in his subject. In these six sessions, José will explore the rhythmic patterns of the Conga ensemble adapted to the instruments that we have.
The last two sessions will feature a guest trumpet player who will join us to play traditional melodies, and participants can learn the accompanying songs.
All percussion instruments will be provided. Some prior experience with hand drumming will be helpful, but if you’re a beginner - no worries! You’ll still benefit greatly from José’s expertise and passion for his craft.
If you have any questions, feel free to drop us a message!
