Singing Through Brokenness: Hallel and the Joy of Sukkot
Event description
How do we experience Sukkot as “The Time of Our Joy” when our hearts are broken? Join composer, prayer leader and rabbinical student Sam Tygiel for a deep dive into "Hallel", his new album of original melodies for the Hallel service, which is prayed throughout the holiday of Sukkot. We will listen to excerpts from the album, learn Torah about the Hallel service and reflect on how communal prayer can guide us through difficult emotions and enable us to uncover authentic joy and gratitude.
Sam Tygiel is an alumnus of Hadar’s Rising Song Residency and a fifth year Rabbinical student at Hebrew College. In his teaching and prayer leadership, Sam draws on the treasure trove of ancestral Jewish music and the rich imaginative world of Jewish mythology to create emotional openings for people to discover connection, curiosity and healing. Sam prioritizes music and teachings from unusual and forgotten sources in order to expand notions of what is normative, permissible, and possible within contemporary Judaism. Sam also composes original Jewish music inspired by these inheritances, which can be heard on his website (samtygiel.com)
