Everyday English is a ministry that brings you alongside with students and with your team as you work together. This year’s winter Training Day will be an opportunity to strengthen your connections, be encouraged by others across Sydney (and beyond), and delve into a range of lesson resources.

Highlights for this Training Day:

Clive Buultjens will give the Bible talk. Clive works as the evangelist with SATYA Network, whose vision is to see people from South Asia and the Hindu faith come to know the Lord Jesus. He will be sharing from his life and ministry experience about how to understand and love your neighbours from South Asia.
A “hands-on” session will give you a chance to try a new resource, or an old resource in a new way.
Each elective is repeated, so you can attend two electives of your choice.

Choose two electives:

1. Adapting for Accessibility
Do you have students who struggle to engage with your lessons because they just can’t hear you properly? Or perhaps you have a student whose eyesight isn’t what it used to be, and they can’t read the material you have prepared.
Hearing and vision loss is very common as we age, and it can make it really hard for students to participate in English classes. In this elective, we will discover practical ways to adapt your teaching and lessons to make them more accessible to all your students.

Stephanie is an Occupational Therapist with over 30 years of experience. She has worked in disability services and paediatric OT, and currently works in aged care, where many of the clients she supports have hearing and/or vision loss. Stephanie is a member of Penrith Anglican Church.

2. Understanding people from a South Asian and Hindu background.
Have you noticed people from a Hindu background in your neighbourhood? Where do they come from? How much do you know about their cultures?
People from South Asia are the largest group of migrants to Australia in the 2020s. Join Clive Buultjens as he shares about South Asian and Hindu worldviews, values, culture and experiences.

Clive works with SATYA Network, seeking to equip churches to understand Hinduism and introduce people from South Asia to the Lord Jesus.

3. Immersive language learning experience
Join Jane Henry for an introductory lesson in Cook Islands Maori. Put yourself in the shoes of your beginner-level students and be reminded about how challenging it is to learn a new language. This fun and interactive session will highlight the particular needs of Beginners and present some principles for planning and teaching lessons for people who are newly arrived or have done little formal English study.

Jane Henry joined Anglicare as the Advisor for the South-West of Sydney in February 2024. She comes from a background in corporate training and has been a founding member and teacher of a community-based language school in South-West Sydney. Jane and her family live and worship in the Campbelltown area.

4. Caring for Every Student: challenging moments as opportunities for deeper and stronger connections
Are you reluctant to teach emotional or sensitive topics such as grief, divorce, war and conflict?
Have you experienced a spontaneous moment of tension, difficulty or awkwardness in class?
Engaging with real-life subjects can be challenging. In this elective, we’ll explore why these moments are difficult and consider cultural biases around vulnerability. Through practical tools and frameworks, we'll learn how to effectively support students from diverse backgrounds in these moments. By acknowledging and addressing the risks involved and our resources as a community, we'll gain confidence and skills to navigate challenging classroom situations with empathy and resilience.

Amanda teaches at SMBC, Moore College, Anglicare and AFES on intercultural engagement, particularly with Buddhists. She draws from her own culturally hybrid lived experience, experiences in two Thai fellowships in Sydney and ESL classes, content expertise and global connections. Holding a Masters of Psychology (Clinical), and a Master of Theological Studies, Amanda has professional experience helping the state-wide NSW public health system provide culturally responsive mental health care to a culturally diverse public, and is passionate effective intercultural engagement.
