Signal Fires: Festival of Forgotten Tales Comic Book Launch

Join friends and fans at Lehrhaus for an exciting BOOK LAUNCH with author Arnon Z. Shorr and illustrator Joshua M. Edelglass (José and the Pirate Captain Toledano) as they debut their latest comic book, Signal Fires, an all-ages adventure story set during the Bar Kochva revolt.

Signal Fires is the newest title in Festival of Forgotten Tales, a series of fun, genre-bending Jewish comic book stories. The Festival series is a recipient of this year's CJP's Arts and Culture Community Impact Grant.

Josh and Arnon will bring their new comic book to Lehrhaus on Tuesday, May 5, and will participate in an engaging discussion and Q&A with The Writer's Block host, Matt Robinson. They will then stick around to autograph books!

Arnon Z. Shorr is an award-winning filmmaker, screenwriter and author. He was born in Haifa, Israel, and grew up in the suburbs of Boston, Massachusetts. His comics include the adventure series Ben Mortara and the Thieves of the Golden Table (Maggid Comics, 2023) and the graphic novel José and the Pirate Captain Toledano (Kar-Ben Publishing, 2022), which was based on his hit short film about Jewish pirates.  Arnon is a 2024 screenwriting fellow with the Jewish Writers Initiative, a founding fellow of the PJ Library Sephardic Stories Initiative, and a member of the inaugural cohort of the MFA in Creative Writing program at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America. Joshua M. Edelglass is the Co-Director of Camp Ramah New England. His illustrations have appeared in a variety of newspapers and magazines, and he illustrated stories for both volumes of The Jewish Comics Anthology, published by Alternate History Comics. Josh illustrated the graphic novel José and the Pirate Captain Toledano, published by Kar-Ben in 2022. Josh’s artwork has appeared in numerous exhibitions, including Pow! Jewish Comics Art and Influence (Brooklyn, 2018), JOMIX -- Jewish Comics: Art and Derivation (New York & Philadelphia, 2016); and The Jew as the Other (New York, 2015).  Josh graduated magna cum laude from Brown University in 1999, he has a Masters in Jewish Studies from Gratz, and he was named to the Ezra Academy alumni hall of fame in 2023. Matt Robinson is an author and educator who hosts the nationally syndicated author talk show, The Writer’s Block. A former editor for The Jewish Advocate, Matt is dedicated to supporting the Jewish community however he can.
