Silent Films are Gay! presents: Filibus w/ Live Score
Description
Films are Gay! presents the second chapter of its second film volume; Silent Films are Gay! a season of queer films across the silent era.
We will be screening the sapphic adventure film Filibus (1915, dir. Mario Roncoroni, 79mins) a truly mad serial that has to be seen to be believed. A sky pirate, Filibus lives in a zeppelin, steals jewels across Sicily, and cross-dresses as a man to seduce the sister of the detective pursuing her just for the fun of it. Truly cinema’s first lesbian baddie, her adventures are joyous, roguish, and the embodiment of “be gay, do crime.”
The film will include an introduction by curator Erik Anderson Scott and a special live score by composer Su Kim.
Su Kim (she/they) is a pianist-composer and music director based in South Korea and London. Rooted in a versatile musical spectrum spanning classical, jazz, folk, indie pop, R&B, and musical theatre, she is particularly passionate about improvised music and multidisciplinary works that speak up for feminism, queer rights, and Asian voices. In addition to a variety of works presented at Off-West End theatres, Brighton Fringe, East 15 Acting School, New Theatre Cardiff, Camden Fringe, and Lambeth Fringe, she has also performed extensively as a session pianist and keyboard player across Camden and East London’s live music scene. Having led multiple projects at King’s College and Goldsmiths, she is keen on collaborative works with bold contemporary storytelling and new writings.
