SILO SOUNDS presents: The Wilbur Whitta Jazz Trio

Enter the amazing soundscape of Wilbur Whitta. An Australian Jazz pianist and composer who has exploded onto the international jazz scene. Wilbur Whitta, joined by Max Alduca (Bass) and Tim Geldens (Drums) will play repertoire of their favourite jazz standards and composers, such as Cedar Walton, Chick Corea, Bill Evans and Joe Henderson.

"Wilbur Whitta is an exceptionally talented young pianist/composer who I expect will make a substantial contribution to Australian music in the years to come." – Mike Nock

Our new event time of 2pm Sunday allows for an afternoon of sublime music, great companionship, fabulous supper, tea and coffee before you wind your way home through our beautiful Hilltops region.

WHERE: Ross Memorial Uniting Church,

WHEN: 2pm, Sunday July 2nd 2023

Wilbur is an multi award-winning contemporary jazz and improvised music pianist and composer. Now based in Sydney (on Gadigal land) Wilbur has performed extensively around Australia, the UK, Europe and Japan. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic he settled in London, worked as an in-demand pianist in the city and received the UK’s Tier 1 Exceptional Talent Visa. Wilbur currently leads his band Wildfire, who are set to record their debut album on ABC Jazz this year.

Wilbur has been presented with numerous honours and awards: Finalist 2021 National Jazz Awards In 2019; awarded the Dankworth Jazz Composition Award for Small Ensemble, semi-finalist Riga Jazz Stage jazz piano competition, the Australia Council Arts Career Development Award, the Leverhulme Trust Postgraduate Scholarship, the Tait Memorial Trust Award, the BBM Youth Support Award for Music and the Anthony and Sharon Lee Foundation Jazz Scholarship.

Wilbur’s musical influences span from pianists Craig Taborn, Aaron Parks, and Kit Downes, through to classical composers such as Sofia Gubaidulina and Elliot Carter. These influences inform Wilbur’s distinctive 'composition-leading' improvisational voice.

The inaugural recipient of a Jazz Scholarship from Sydney University, Sydney Conservatorium of Music, Wilbur then graduated with First Class Honours. In London, he was awarded the Diploma of the Royal Academy of Music (DipRAM) on completion of his scholarship Masters Degree.

"I was immediately struck by Wilbur's exceptional technical facility, as well as his singular and personal voice on his instrument" – Kit Downes

"Wilbur Whitta is an exceptionally talented young pianist/composer who I expect will make a substantial contribution to Australian music in the years to come." – Mike Nock
