SILO SOUNDS presents: Wilbur Whitta Jazz Quartet in 'Shades of Colour'

Enter the amazing colour wheel of Wilbur Whitta. An Australian Jazz pianist and composer who has exploded onto the international jazz scene. Wilbur Whitta, returns by popular demand to Harden Murrumburrah, this time bringing his quartet: Jack Stoneham (Saxophone), Tom Avgenicos (Trumpet) and Alex Inman-Hislop (Drums). We can promise an unforgettable evening of vibrant colours, pastel tones and sweet sounds emerging from these beautiful four instrumentalists.

THE PERFORMERS:

Four of Australia’s very best come together for this special performance.

Wilbur Whitta, piano, is an award-winning Gadigal (Sydney) based pianist and composer who makes contemporary jazz and improvised music. Originally from Canberra, Wilbur has performed extensively around Australia, the UK, Europe and Japan. Recently, he has appeared as a member of legendary Australian jazz outfit “Ten Part Invention” and performed along side ECM recording artist Kit Downes. He was selected as a finalist in the 2021 National Jazz Awards, and in 2019 (while living in London) won the UK-based Dankworth Jazz Composition Award. He currently leads his own band “Wildfire”, who have just recorded their debut album for ABC Jazz.

Jack Stoneham is a saxophonist and composer based in Sydney, Australia. As a leader, Jack released his debut album Data Retrieval (Eupcaccia Records) in 2019 with his band The Pen Club. Jack also leads his band Walk featuring Hilary Geddes, Toby Graham, Linus Foley, Jacques Emery and Ashley Stoneham and Poltophagy featuring Wilbur Whitta, Yutaro Okuda, Jacques Emery and Ashley Stoneham. Other collaborative bands Jack is a part of include Wilbur Whitta’s Wildfire, jazz quintet Skram Luff and hip-hop group Sagrada Familiar. In the past Jack has been a member of the large-scale improvising ensemble Splinter Orchestra and improvising group the Massed Single Reedists. As a freelance musician, Jack has performed in many various settings around the Sydney music scene including with Mike Nock, Alon Ilser and Clayton Thomas among others.

Alex Inman-Hislop, drums, has enjoyed a varied musical career and is regarded as the rhythmic backbone behind so many ensembles of varying styles and sounds ranging from jazz, grindcore/metal, minimalism and electronic-adjacent. The Sri Lankan-born, Sydney-based drummer is a fresh spirit within the Australian music community. A multi-ARIA nominated drummer and composer, was nominated for the prestigious Freedman Fellowship Award for Jazz Artists, shortlisted in the 2018 Wangaratta National Jazz Awards and has performed in Japan, Korea, China, Taiwan, Malaysia, Indonesia and Lebanon. His style benefits from his restless spirit and the ability to incorporate elements of Sri Lankan music into his playing. Alex is a permanent member of ARIA-Nominated world music act Zela Margossian Quintet, Hilary Geddes Quartet, Hamed Sadeghi’s Project Masnavi and has worked alongside national and international luminaries such as Jay Rodriguez (USA), Barney McAll, Cameron Undy, Janet Seidel and many more. Alongside his performing career he holds a position at the University of Sydney’s Conservatorium of Music as a Casual Lecturer in Jazz and Drumset Performance.

Tom Avgenicos, trumpet. Based on Gadigal/Sydney and Awabakal/Newcastle lands, Tom Avgenicos is a jazz and improvising trumpeter and composer whose work is exploratory, bold, and deeply emotive. Working in an array of creative contexts, often across media, his sonic palette creates spaces for conversation and connection to form the centrepiece of performance. With his unique and individual improvisational approach, Tom has emerged as a vital presence on the Australian jazz scene. He has released four critically acclaimed albums as leader or co-leader with Delay 45, Avgenicos Brothers, and Tuckerbox and can often be heard in performance with jazz elders Mike Nock, Ten Part Invention, Barney McAll and Matt McMahon. His awards and achievements include the 2022 Freedman Jazz Fellow, Margaret Henderson Scholarship and Global Mobility Scholarship (University of Sydney), the Regional Touring Grant (SIMA) and Sonic Futures Artist (SIMA), and recognition as finalist at the National Jazz Awards and Generations in Jazz competitions.
