Event description

Acclaimed international guests Silvia Tarozzi (violin) & Deborah Walker (cello) perform in Castlemaine/Djaara as part of their debut Australian tour. Playing together for over 20 years, the duo's music is characterized by a profound interplay, a focus on the acoustic qualities of their instruments' sound, and a search for new possibilities in tuning and gesture. They've worked directly with some of the world's most important living composers such as Eliane Radigue, Pascal Criton and Eyvind Kang, and have toured the world over. This is their premiere performance in Castlemaine.

For their first of two performances in Djaara, they'll play Pyrocumulus, an acousmatic meditation on the 2019-20 bushfires for 8-channel electronics composed by local musician Anthony Pateras. Formed by processed environmental recordings, live strings and voice, this piece conjures scorched landscapes interspersed with moments of introspection and bewilderment. This work was commissioned by Radio France in 2023 by GRM director François J. Bonnet, and premiered at the Akousma Festival in Paris.

With a bespoke acousmonium installed in Punctum's ICU theatre, the evening will kick off with local guitar virtuoso Alexander Garsden and electro-acoustic upcycling experimentalist Hi Hates.

Pre-sales are $25+bf or $30 on the door. Attendees can buy a two-night pass for $45+bf to see the duo's 2nd performance of feminist Italian worker's songs at the Red Hill Hotel the following evening.

This concert is supported by Fondazione Ater, Emilia-Romagna.
