The Simba Sessions is a small, monthly, community-ran evening of music, poetry and story, curated around a theme.

Music, poetry and the arts have always held up a mirror to society and culture. At The Simba Sessions we nurture and celebrate creativity and diversity, understanding that the stories that lay behind the art are often as powerful as the art itself.

As our artists share their stories, we confront our own.

This month we showcase Melbourne composer Luke Howard, singer songwriter Madeliene Cope, and slam poet Tony Blaine!

Join us with for a ‘quiet night out’ to explore our stories in poetry and song, in candle-lit warmth. Always, special night, this will be a night not to miss!

About our artists:

Luke Howard is an Australian composer and pianist. As one of the country’s foremost practitioners of contemporary classical music, his music captivates audiences worldwide. He grew up in Melbourne and has been a pianist since childhood, first studying classical piano and later going on to graduate in jazz performance at the Victorian College of the Arts. Inspired by artists such as Philip Glass and Arvo Pärt, his music masters the art of wordless storytelling across many forms. With solo, duo and trio albums, scores for film, theatre and ballet, and countless collaborations with artists, choreographers and musicians, Howard is in demand as both a composer and performer. ‘Absolutely heavenly’ is how his music is described by BBC Radio 6 broadcaster Mary Anne Hobbs.

Tony Blaine is an American poet new to the Melbourne arts scene. He has explored various poetry events in the city and took first place in Slamalamadingdong’s slam poetry competition in June. Much of his writing focuses on social and metaphysical themes and is influenced by his experience in U.S. society.
