Singing is all the same, isn't it? Or are different styles completely different from each other? Join ANATS Qld as we investigate the similarities and differences between CCM (Contemporary Commercial Music) singing and Western Classical singing. Our expert presenters will provide insight into teaching both styles via a short lecture, and demonstrate their teaching approach with our masterclass singers in a live teaching demonstration. Each masterclass singer will sing in both a Classical and a CCM style, so that you can be a Fly On The Wall to the process of learning to move between styles.

Highly respected pedagogues Dr Irene Bartlett and Shelli Hulcombe are ready to share their teaching tools and strategies for cross-genre training to help you and your students to develop a deeper understanding of both CCM and Classical singing. Whether you are classically trained, CCM trained, or have experience in a variety of styles, this is a professional development opportunity not to be missed. About the presenters:

Irene Bartlett

Associate Professor, Queensland Conservatorium, Griffith University

Associate Professor Irene Bartlett is Head of Pedagogy, Coordinator of Contemporary Voice and Jazz Voice Studies at the Queensland Conservatorium, Griffith University, Australia. Irene is recognized nationally and internationally as a leading pedagogue in the fields of contemporary commercial music performance and singing voice pedagogy and, to date, she is one of only two pedagogues to receive the prestigious award of Australian Master Teacher - Australian National Association of Teachers of Singing (ANATS).

Irene has been a keynote speaker, invited speaker, invited panellist, and/or presenter of masterclass, workshops and paper presentations at international and national conferences and symposia including: the International Congress of Voice Teachers (ICVT), the Pan European Voice Conference (PEVOC), Voice Foundation Symposium (CPV), the New Zealand Association of Teachers of Singing (NEWZATS) and the Australian National Association of Teachers of Singing (ANATS).

Irene’s research and extensive teaching practice are centred on sustainable technique, vocal health, performance longevity and cross training for singers of all music styles. She has a lengthy publication record (journal articles and book chapters), most recently as an invited contributor to international publications “So You Want To Sing CCM-A Guide for Performers” and “Training Contemporary Commercial Singers”. Most recently Irene was the vocal coach for Austin Butler in Baz Luhrman’s bio-pic “Elvis”. Irene’s students (past and present) work as professional contemporary gig singers in ‘live’ performance venues, in MT productions and the CCM recording industry; many are recipients of prestigious industry and academic awards.

Shelli Hulcombe

BMus (Hons), GrapDipOp, GradDipMus, MMusSt (Vocal Pedagogy)

Shelli Hulcombe is a Senior Lecturer in Vocal Studies at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music, Griffith University. She completed performance studies at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music, furthering her studies in the UK at the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester. Other qualifications include a Graduate Diploma in Music (Sydney University) and a Master of Music Studies majoring in Vocal Pedagogy (Griffith University).

Shelli has appeared in principal operatic roles and concert performances with many of Australia’s leading state orchestras and ensembles, as well as undertaking international engagements in the UK, Europe and South East Asia.

Shelli is a passionate educator of both singers and singing teachers. She served as President for ANATS (The Australian Association of Teachers of Singing) from 2017-2021 and is an active member of ANATS, AVA and NATS. She is in demand as an adjudicator and masterclass presenter across the state. Shelli’s research interests include the use of cross-genre training to improve vocal outcomes for the classical singer and she is currently completing PhD studies in this area. She has presented conference papers and workshops for the International Congress of Voice Teachers, The Australian National Association of Teachers of Singing, the Australian Voice Association, and the Queensland Music Teachers Association.
