Event description

Across two documentaries, follow the lives of six young artists finding their voice in 70s and 80s East Germany. This screening at The Capitol accompanies the exhibition Wanderings About History – The Photography of Ulrich Wüst, on display at RMIT Gallery.

Cornelia Schleime, Gabriele Stötzer and Tina Bara, as young women in Cold War era East Germany, were repressed and persecuted by the socialist system and the Stasi for their art and political protest. Rebels (Rebellinnen - Fotografie. Underground. DDR.) intimately explores their fearless struggle for existence, creative freedom and exceptional artistic works. Watch trailer.

Beauty & Decay (Schönheit & Vergänglichkeit) explores the creative lives of Sven Marquardt (perhaps better known as the stone-faced gatekeeper of ultra-inclusive techno club Berghain), Dominique Hollenstein (Dome) and Robert Paris. A fascinating look at three close friends, still giving society the middle finger and ignoring preconceived notions of what it means to age. Watch trailer.

Co-presented by RMIT Culture with the Goethe-Institut.
