Description

Join JCG's Community Engagement Coordinator and artist Ron Bradfield Jnr as he engages in discussion with fellow artists Susan Flavell, Pangrok Sulap, Joana Partyka, and Lea Taylor. "Skin in the Game" will delve into the relationship between art and activism, exploring themes of disruption, provocation, and truth-telling.

Artists are often conscientious about our planet and recognise the deep connection between art and the environment—through materials, processes, and sharing. For these artists, their work serves to express concern and assume responsibility for our future on this planet.

12:30-1:30pm - Panel Discussion, questions from the audience are welcome at the end of the discussion.

1:30-2:00pm - Refreshments.

Pangrok Sulap
is a Malaysian collective of artists, musicians and social activists with a mission to empower rural communities and the marginalised through art. “Pangrok” is the local pronunciation of “punk rock”, and “Sulap” is a hut or a resting place usually used by farmers in Sabah, Borneo. From the collective, Adi Helmi Jaini and Rizo Leong are currently artists in residence at Curtin, in preparation for their involvement in the Indian Ocean Craft Triennale at John Curtin Gallery, opening in July.

She has exhibited in galleries around Australia including Flinders Lane Gallery, Modern Times and the Perth Institute of Contemporary Art (PICA). Joana is an active climate campaigner who in 2023 spray-painted the Woodside logo onto Frederick McCubbin’s Down on his luck at the Art Gallery of WA, highlighting the company’s destruction of our climate and desecration of culture.
