Skipper Identification Workshop with Cliff Meyer
Event description
Here is a great opportunity to get to know the Skipper family (Hesperiidae) which consists of Awls, Ochres, Grass-skippers, Grass-darts, Darters, Palm-darts and Swifts. They, make up the second largest butterfly family in Australia.
Brisbane's Big Butterfly Count is thrilled to have Cliff Meyer again with us to run this workshop, introduce us to this fascinating butterfly family and train us in identifying the species, which – as many of our survey participants know – is not always an easy task. While we have some amazing records collected over the last few years, we are still looking for substantial skipper numbers not yet encountered. That is another reason to improve our skills.
Cliff continues to be instrumental for Brisbane’s Big Butterfly Count. He will be sharing his vast knowledge and allowing us to benefit from decades of experience identifying, researching and scientifically describing species. Anyone who knows Cliff also knows that learning is easy when having fun, and that his enthusiasm and love of butterflies are contagious. He will give us an introduction and overview. Teams will then go to work identifying specimens rotated between them. Field guides and magnifying glasses will support your efforts. Who knows which team will win and take a little prize away.
This is for all knowledge levels. You are most welcome as a newcomer to butterflies as well as someone who may want to refresh what you learned during past surveys and last year's workshop.
A healthy morning tea is, of course, part of our workshop.
