Slow Stitch: Handsewn Textile Collage with Kadie Nugent

Class Description: The course Slow Stitch is an invitation to slow down, think deeply, and to trust your hands to stitch your story into fabric. We will learn basic sewing techniques such as the running stitch, chain stitch, and appliqué to create a handmade needle book to house your sewing needles. Once we’ve completed our needle books we will start a series of collaged textile sample pieces to learn turn-needle appliqué and more complex stitches with a focus on drawing with our stitches and incorporating text into our works. Ultimately artists will compose a larger final work using their samples and preferred stitches.

Instructor: Through textiles and collage, Kadie Nugent (they/them) ('15 Fiber) investigates how materiality articulates questions of identity, belonging, and the search for meaning. They were an artist-in-residence at Charlotte Street Foundation in Kansas City, Missouri and later worked with the Spencer Museum of Art’s Exhibitions team in Lawrence, Kansas. Kadie has assisted in teaching at craft schools, including with embroidery artist Ruth Miller at Penland School of Craft in Spruce Pine, NC, and paper artist Delaney Smith at Arrowmont School of Craft in Gatlinburg, TN. After earning their MFA from the University of Kansas in 2020, Kadie continued their practice through residencies at Paducah AIR Studio in Paducah, KY, and Lackland Well in Farmville, VA. Currently, they teach at the Kansas City Art Institute in the Fiber Department.

Eligibility: Age 18+.

Supplies: The instructor will contact registered students directly regarding materials and supplies.

Parking: Parking is available in any of the (NON-RESERVED) KCAI parking lot spaces across campus. RESERVED spaces are available after 5pm on the weekdays and all day on the weekends. There is also available street parking surrounding KCAI campus.
