Small City Presents: Priori (CA)

In 2022, Small City proudly brought a diverse roster of contemporary electronic artists sitting at the forefront of the international music community to Sugar Nightclub. Our ethos then, is our ethos now: to provide a forward-thinking nightlife experience on Kaurna Land. 

For this reason, Small City is excited to finally present Priori, one of contemporary electronic music's modern masterminds.

"Under the Priori moniker, Québecois musician Francis Latreille's original style has established itself as a crucial voice in underground techno.

His 2019 full-length debut On A Nimbus, released on his own NAFF imprint, was a haunting foray into the possibility/impossibility of technological utopia, where elements of dub techno, drum & bass. IDM and tech house curiously converged, resulting in an album at once familiar, modern and undeniably singular.

Francis followed that with a string of essential releases – from the slow-burning techy meditations of SCN and Little Flower to the anthemic, trance-inflected Infinity – ending with 2021’s Your Own Power. Where On A Nimbus is overtly pensive and opaque, Your Own Power rises to a lighter and more joyful atmosphere, full of fractalizing patterns, ear-prickling textures, and crystalline melodies that emerge and flicker in stunning detail. 

Here, as in all of Priori’s music, there remains an unresolved tension of opposites; between the biological and the synthetic, the actual and the possible, the positive and the negatively charged. In this way, the body of work stands as a study of nature of a kind, a science of life in its myriad forms."

Priori's works transgress 90s influenced trance, progressive burners, drum & bass, peak time saxophone house, improvised jazz and ambient. Featured throughout much of his work are signature licks of crystallised percussion, bubbly chords, heavenly drones and emotional breakbeats. Frequently, he collaborates with artists like Ex-Terrestrial, Ludwig A.F, Roza Terenzi, Dust-e-1, Ciel & Patrick Holland. 

His remix works showcase his wizadry as a producer, seamlessly flipping anything and everything into a techy burner, emotional breakbeat journey or explosive techno whomper and has remixed tracks from Adam Pits, Suchi, Biodive and Riohv to name a few. His own releases have been remixed by the likes of D.Tiffany, Donato Dozzy, Roza Terenzi and Aurora Halal.

Priori is also an accomplished mixing engineer; a quick search will reveal an exhaustive list of credits on projects by Maara, Roza Terenzi, D. Tiffany, Escape Artist, Bambii, Gene Tellem, and Ex-Terrestrial. Between the label he runs with Adam Feingold (Ex-Terrestrial) and the studio he runs with Patrick Holland (Project Pablo), Francis is quietly shaping the course of underground electronic dance music globally.

With Priori taking the reigns, it was an obvious decision to book support from Romi - one of our beloved cities' profound techno DJs, and Burden - who's instantly recognisable sound seamlessly flows between 2000s progressive house, ambient breaks, tech house and jungle.
