Event description

Understanding Stratum Subdivisions in High-Density Housing

As Australia embraces more mixed-use, mixed-tenure developments, the legal and operational frameworks behind them are becoming increasingly complex. This event explores stratum subdivisions—a legal structure distinct from strata title but often used in large-scale developments that include shared facilities, public open space, and sustainability infrastructure.

These developments are managed by Building Management Committees under a Building/Strata Management Statement, and understanding their structure is essential for ensuring long-term financial, social, and environmental viability.

Whether you're a planner, architect, designer, landscape architect, surveyor, researcher, or involved in social and affordable housing funding, regulation, or delivery, this session will deepen your understanding of the legal and practical implications of stratum subdivisions.

Speakers:
  • Judy Tomas – General Manager Commercial, Contracts and Compliance, Mission Australia Housing

  • Adela Smith – Partner, Banking and Projects Group, Gilbert + Tobin

  • Tonja Gibson – Director, Strata Answers, Strata Consultants

  • Professor Cathy Sherry – Macquarie University Law School and Smart Green Cities Research Centre Theme Leader for Sustainable Cities.

This event will include presentations and a workshop component, morning tea will be provided.
