Event description

Presented by Wyndham City Arts & Culture, Smell Art and Pasifika Community Australia

Join Erin from Smell Art and discover the diverse scents found in and around the Penrose Community Garden run by the Pasifika Community in Tarneit. Discover a plethora of smells from the seasonal and organic produce of the garden to the surrounding native plants to the bakery across the road! We finish the walk with a BBQ hosted by the Pasifika Community Garden members and hear about their garden.

During the Smell Walk you will be asked to record 12 scents that you encounter. These will be collated and sent to Dr. Kate McLean in the UK to design a ‘Smell Map’ for her upcoming book: An Atlas of Smells, Stinks and Scents. Learn more about Dr. Kate McLean here.

Everyone is welcome! You can do the Smell Walk solo, with a friend, or as a family.

What to Expect:

11:30 AM: Meet out the front of the Penrose Community Centre where you’ll be guided to the Community Garden for an introduction to the garden from Tonya (Pasifika Community member) and a Smell Walk briefing from Erin. You’ll be given a pen and clipboard to record the scents you encounter.

11:45 AM: Embark on a 30-minute self-guided walk of the garden and surrounding area, recording the scents you experience.

12:15 PM: Gather for a debrief and smell talk, where you’ll learn from Erin about how your sense of smell works, discover some benefits of focusing on smell, and have the opportunity to share your Smell Walk experiences.

12:30 PM: Stay for a BBQ (vegetarian or halal options), hosted by the Pasifika Community.
